a friend just told me about this because it happened near where he lives and it's so insane i have to share TIL that in the 1997 - 2000 period there was such a huge traffic in smuggling cigarettes from Albania to Southern Italy that that gangs deployed “monster” cars on the A16 highway (armored with steel plates, reinforced bumpers for ramming, fake blue police lights, rear lamps to blind pursuers, spike and oil dispensers even silicone-filled tires) forcing the Italian government to send over 3,100 officers and spend 4.45 billion lire (≈ €2.3 million) on equally modified vehicles to stop them
