i feel like a big part of my (pop) culture background has developed like it is today mostly because growing up in the early 2000s and consuming a lot of TV meant that i didn't always choose what I was watching and was exposed to different stuff all the time (moreso since I had to split the TV in my bedroom with my sister since for the longest time we shared a bunk bed and we had different taste in media pretty often leading to fights on who got to hold the remote) on the surface tiktok/reels/yt shorts does a similar thing with an endless scrolling feed BUT it's constantly tailoring it specifically for you and what it thinks you might be interested in based on what you have already watched, creating a sort of echo chamber i am not saying oh i miss the good old times but idk it's cool when you don't just keep seeing the same stuff over and over again i think normal youtube (not shorts) is still pretty good for this at least
